United States Navy corpsman (1923–1994) who was a member of the patrol that captured the top of Mount Suribachi and raised the first U.S. flag on Iwo Jima on February 23, 1945. Iconic 6.5 x 8 print of Joe Rosenthal's enduring image of six United States Marines raising the American flag atop Mount Suribachi during the Battle of Iwo Jima, taken by the Associated Press photographer on February 23, 1945, signed in black ballpoint, "John H.
