ALS signed “Always yours, Ike,” two pages, 8 x 10.5, August 27, [1945]. Handwritten letter to his wife, Mamie, in part: "Last eve I got back from Ireland after having been held near a day by bad weather. It was a tiring trip. These 'ceremonies' take a lot out of me, even though everyone is most hospitable and kind. There were these big formations at Belfast, to say nothing of the informal activities…The problem of running Germany gets no easier. There is much to do—and some things conflict with others…But we plug away and are making progress. The immediate concern is conditions here this winter. Every indication points to a ration basis little above starvation level for the population with acute shortages in fuel and shelter. I truly hope there will be no unrest requiring the use of troops." In fine condition.
This revealing letter dates to the first weeks after the end of World War II, when General Dwight D. Eisenhower was transitioning from victorious Supreme Allied Commander to one of the principal American authorities overseeing occupied Germany. Written to Mamie just days before the formal Japanese surrender, it captures Eisenhower amid the exhaustion of postwar ceremony and the far more daunting work of reconstruction.
His reference to Belfast reflects the continuing public honors and military reviews accorded to him across Allied nations, but the heart of the letter lies in his sober assessment of Germany’s condition: hunger, fuel shortages, destroyed housing, and the possibility of civil unrest as winter approached. The unusually candid tone—moving from personal fatigue to the grim realities of occupation—shows Eisenhower grappling with the humanitarian and political consequences of victory, offering an intimate glimpse of the immense responsibilities he faced in helping stabilize Europe after the war.
