Description

Signed book: Conquest of the Moon. First edition. NY: Viking Press, 1953. Hardcover (no dust jacket), 8.25 x 11, 126 pages. Signed and inscribed on the half-title page in ink, “To: David, cordially – Wernher von Braun, 10 February 1954.” In very good to fine condition, with soiling and wear to the loose spine, and partial separation to the front hinge; inner pages are all clean and fine.

A sought-after first edition of Conquest of the Moon, one of the landmark popular science works of the early Space Age, written by pioneering rocket engineer Wernher von Braun with science writers Willy Ley and Fred L. Whipple. Expanded from the influential Collier’s magazine series on space travel published beginning in 1952, the book presented a scientifically grounded vision of manned lunar exploration more than a decade before Apollo 11, helping shape public imagination and influence the future direction of American astronautics during the Cold War. Equally celebrated for its artwork, the volume features dramatic lunar illustrations by renowned space artist Chesley Bonestell, alongside accompanying artwork by Fred Freeman and Rolf Klep, which provided readers with some of the most influential early visualizations of space travel and the Moon’s surface, inspiring generations of scientists, engineers, and science-fiction artists.
