Description

Partly-printed DS, signed "H. Clay," one page, 8.25 x 5.75, January 29, 1850. A certificate from the Office of the Colonization Society, issued to “Mrs. Julia A. Perkins,” and conferring her a lifetime membership within the American Colonization Society. Signed at the conclusion by Henry Clay, and countersigned by William McLain. Matted to an overall size of 13.5 x 11. In very good to fine condition, with a tear, and associated small hole, to the top center.

Founded in 1816, the American Colonization Society advocated the resettlement of free African Americans in Africa, leading to the establishment of Liberia in the 1820s. The organization attracted support from a broad range of antebellum political, religious, and civic leaders, though its goals and methods remained deeply controversial. Henry Clay was among the movement’s most prominent advocates and served for many years as president of the society.

Signed by Clay during the final years of his career, the certificate dates to one of the most consequential periods of his public life, as sectional tensions over slavery intensified and Clay prepared the compromise proposals that would become the Compromise of 1850. While some Americans viewed colonization as a gradual solution to the country’s racial and political tensions, many Black leaders and abolitionists strongly opposed the movement, seeing it as incompatible with citizenship and equality in the United States. Clay himself described colonization as possessing ‘a moral fitness in the idea of returning to Africa her children, whose ancestors have been torn from her by the ruthless hand of fraud and violence.’
