Description

Influential black writer, educator, and civil rights activist (1868-1963) best known as the co-founder of the NAACP and author of The Souls of Black Folk. Two items: a vintage ink signature, "W. E. B. Du Bois, N.Y., 14 Aug. 51,” on a 5.75 x 4 Czech postal card featuring a printed portrait of Du Bois; and an unsigned draft in the hand of Du Bois, handwritten in pencil on a 7.5 x 10 sheet, which reads: “Education / The Crucial Fronts / 1. I attack the Hampton Idea / 2. I stem the Fisk Heresy / 3. The Crisis in Negro College Training / 4. The Negro Common School / 5. Education in Africa.” In overall fine condition. Accompanied by a TLS from his wife, Shirley Graham Du Bois, dated December 21, 1961, wishing friends a Merry Christmas from Accra, Ghana.

The outline appears to capture DuBois organizing the principal “fronts” in Black education, likely as preparation for a lecture, essay series, or manuscript project. The headings reflect several of the central educational debates that defined his career, including his opposition to the industrial education philosophy associated with Hampton Institute and Booker T. Washington’s Tuskegee model (“I attack the Hampton Idea”), as well as his apparent criticism of developments at Fisk University, his alma mater (“I stem the Fisk Heresy”). The remaining points of “The Crisis in Negro College Training,” “The Negro Common School,” and “Education in Africa” expand the framework from Black higher education to broader educational and Pan-African concerns.
