Description

At the height of his nation-building reforms, Atatürk signs a presidential commission appointing Maxim Schürmann honorary consul of the Turkish Republic in Cologne

Partly-printed DS in Ottoman Turkish, signed “Gazi M. Kemal,” one page, 23.25 x 20.25, March 20, 1929. President Atatürk appoints Maxim Schürmann as honorary consul of the Turkish Republic in Cologne. Signed at the conclusion by President Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. The document, which features an ornate calligraphic “Gazi Mustafa Kemal” heading beneath a crescent-and-star emblem, was issued less than three months after the mandatory implementation of Atatürk’s landmark 1928 alphabet reform, and is particularly notable for its transitional presentation, combining Ottoman Turkish administrative script with prominent Latin-letter titling. Framed to an overall size of 25 x 21.75. In fine condition, with multiple vertical folds and scattered light offsetting to the ink. The appointment reflects Atatürk’s effort to modernize Turkey and strengthen diplomatic and commercial relationships with Europe during the Republic’s early consolidation, at a time when Germany had emerged as one of the Turkish Republic’s leading commercial partners.

According to the consignor, the document was originally presented to his great-grandfather, Maximilian Schürmann, in recognition of his service to the Turkish Republic as honorary consul in Cologne, and descended through the family. The consignor further notes that Schürmann maintained commercial ties with Turkey during the early Republican period. An unusually substantial and historically significant Atatürk document issued during the height of the statesman’s nation-building reforms.
