Description

In his capacity as Royal and Imperial Court Kapellmeister, Antonio Salieri signs an official court certification for a lauded Viennese organ builder in 1798, the very year Beethoven dedicated his Violin Sonatas, Op. 12, to his former teacher in vocal composition

Manuscript DS in German, signed “Ant. Salieri, Maestro di Capella della Corte Imperiale,” one page, 9.5 x 15, April 9, 1798. Official manuscript certification issued in Salieri’s capacity as imperial court Kapellmeister, attesting to the distinguished service of the late Viennese organ builder Johann Friedrich Ferstl within the Habsburg court and chapel establishment. In part (translated): “That the late Johann Friedrich Ferstl, court organ-maker, had been employed as an actual member of the imperial and royal court chapel—that he rendered personal service both here in the city at court church services and court chamber music performances, as well as outside the country at coronations and ceremonies—that he therefore had been a true court servant and, as such, directly attached to the highest court establishment, is hereby certified.” Signed prominently at the conclusion by Salieri as imperial court music director. The document retains its original red lacquer seal bearing a crowned monogram. In fine condition.

Johann Friedrich Ferstl (ca. 1720-1785) ranked among the notable organ builders of eighteenth-century Vienna and is known to have constructed the organ for the Hofburg chapel, with additional instruments attributed to him at several important Viennese court and ecclesiastical sites, including Schönbrunn Palace. Salieri, one of the dominant musical figures of the late Habsburg court, served as court Kapellmeister under Joseph II and his successors, overseeing Vienna’s musical life during the era of Mozart and Beethoven. At the time this document was signed, Beethoven was completing his Violin Sonatas, Op. 12, dedicated to Salieri as his teacher in vocal composition, reflecting Salieri’s central position within Vienna’s musical establishment at the close of the century. An exceptional imperial court document linking two important figures of Viennese musical culture.
