Description

Westminster Bank corporate resolution signed by all five Rolling Stones and manager Andrew Loog Oldham on New Year’s Eve 1965—establishing banking authority for Nanker Phelge Music Ltd., the publishing company behind the band’s early collective compositions

Partly-printed DS signed by the Rolling Stones and their manager, Andrew Loog Oldham, one page, 8 x 13, December 31, 1965. A Westminster Bank corporate banking resolution document for “Nanker Phelge Ltd. (Music),” the Rolling Stones’ collective songwriting and royalty entity, appoints Westminster Bank Limited as bankers for Nanker Phelge Ltd. and authorizes designated company representatives to execute banking and financial transactions on behalf of the corporation. A handwritten amendment specifies that the bank is authorized to accept the signatures of “Mr A. L. Oldham and Mr W. Wyman only,” reflecting Oldham’s role as secretary and Bill Wyman’s role as chairman. Signed in the designated ‘signature’ field in ballpoint by the full classic lineup: “M. Jagger,” “Brian Jones,” “Bill Wyman,” “Keith Richard,” and “C. R. Watt,” as well as by Oldham. Both Wyman and Oldham sign again below in their respective capacities as chairman and secretary. The document lists the company address as “138, Ivor Court, Gloucester Place, N.W.1” and identifies the signatories in their corporate capacities, including Andrew Loog Oldham as “Director/Secretary,” with Jagger, Jones, Wyman, Richards, and Watts each designated as “Director.” In very good condition, with multiple folds and creases, light toning and staining, and a few edge tears.

“Nanker Phelge” was the pseudonym adopted by the Rolling Stones for songs credited collectively to the band rather than specifically to the Jagger/Richards partnership. The name appeared on numerous early Stones compositions, including ‘Stoned,’ ‘2120 South Michigan Avenue,’ ‘Off the Hook,’ and ‘The Under Assistant West Coast Promotion Man.’ Executed at the close of 1965, the breakthrough year of ‘(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction’ and the group’s emergence as an international phenomenon, the document reflects the Rolling Stones’ transition into a major international recording and songwriting enterprise. Nanker Phelge Music Ltd. served as the publishing company through which those collective compositions were administered.

Bill Wyman confirmed in his 2002 book, Rolling with the Stones: 'When the Stones cut ‘Stoned’ – or ‘Stones,’ according to early misprinted pressings – as the B-side to ‘I Wanna Be Your Man,’ Brian suggested crediting it to Nanker Phelge. The entire band would share writing royalties. Phelge came from Edith Grove flatmate Jimmy Phelge, while a Nanker was a revolting face that band members, Brian in particular, would pull.'
