Description

Early American document signed by a signatory to the Mayflower Compact and an early governor of Plymouth Colony

Early American manuscript DS, signed "John Alden" and "Tho: Prence," one page, 8 x 12, January 23, 1663. An indenture between Edward Rew and William Halstone, both of Canton, Massachusetts, originally executed on October 20, 1647, and later docketed and signed in the lower margin by Aldrn and Prence. In part: "This indenture made the twentieth day of the tenth month in the year of our Lord one thousand five hundred forty seven. Between Edward Rew: inhabitant of Canton…& William Halstone inhabitant of the said town of Canton…witnesseth that I Edward Rew aforesaid…have sold unto William Halstone…my house & lands standing & lying in the bounds & limits of the aforesaid plantation of Canton." Mounted, matted, and framed with an image and caption to an overall size of 25.5 x 18.5. In very good to fine condition, with an area of restored paper loss to the lower right edge, and minor paper loss at the intersections of the partially separated folds.

John Alden (c. 1598–1687) sailed to America aboard the Mayflower in 1620 and became the seventh signer of the Mayflower Compact. Hired as the ship’s cooper, Alden was not originally among the Pilgrim separatists, but chose to remain in Plymouth and became one of the colony’s most prominent early settlers. He outlived the other Compact signers and has long occupied an important place in American colonial memory, further immortalized in Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s 1858 poem The Courtship of Miles Standish, which popularized the romantic tradition of Alden, Priscilla Mullins, and Miles Standish.

Thomas Prence (c. 1601–1672) arrived in Plymouth Colony aboard the Fortune in 1621 and became one of the colony’s leading political figures, serving as governor in 1634, 1638, and again from 1657 until 1672. His long tenure placed him at the center of Plymouth’s civic diplomacy during the years preceding King Philip’s War. More than 360 years old and created just forty-three years after the arrival of the Mayflower, this rare surviving document bears the signatures of two of Plymouth Colony's most influential leaders.
