Description

Patton's question mark—the general signs “3rd Army” as his only home during his 1945 Victory Tour

World War II service roster, 8 x 10, done in a standard bound lined composition book, boldly signed in blue pencil on the twenty-sixth page, "G. S. Patton, Jr., 3rd Army," adding a question mark under the column entitled "Home until date." Patton signs alongside 850+ other ordinary servicemen registering arrivals and destinations, dated June and July 1945—likely signed during Patton's June 1945 'Welcome Home Tour,' when he arrived at Bedford Airport, Massachusetts on June 7th and visited Boston, Denver, and Los Angeles before returning to Europe.

The emotional resonance of the entry lies in its contrast with the ordinary servicemen surrounding him. While the other men list hometowns and dates of leave, Patton gives his “address” simply as “3rd Army”—revealing that, even amid America’s victory celebrations, home for Patton was not a place, but his command. The question mark beneath his return date is especially poignant in hindsight: rather than remaining in the United States, Patton returned to occupied Germany shortly thereafter. He would be relieved of Third Army command in October 1945 and die only months later following an automobile accident in December. More than a simple autograph, the roster captures a fleeting and deeply human moment for one of World War II’s most legendary commanders—celebrated at home, yet already bound for the uncertainties awaiting him overseas. In very good to fine condition, with creasing and wear to the covers; inner pages are all clean and unaffected.
