Description

General (1885–1946) in the Imperial Japanese Army during World War II whose conquest of Malaya and Singapore in 70 days earned him the sobriquet 'The Tiger of Malaya'; he then commanded the unsuccessful defense of the Philippines against the invading Allies under Douglas MacArthur, surrendered, and on trial before a military commission in Manila for atrocities committed by soldiers under his command. He was found guilty and hanged, establishing the 'Yamashita Standard' of command responsibility. Booklet entitled "Scenario for Instrument of Surrender," four pages, 5.25 x 8, signed on the front cover in fountain pen in English and Japanese, "T. Yamashita." The brief booklet outlines the dialogue and action for the surrender ceremony held in Baguio, Luzon, Philippines, in September 1945. In very good condition, with a central vertical fold and moderately heavy overall creasing. Accompanied by the original War Department mailing envelope from Sgt. Robert MacMillan, YANK Far East (APO 500), postmarked September 1945, addressed to Mrs. Robert MacMillan in New York City; annotated in pencil, "War correspondent, Yamashita signed it for him."
