Description

Japanese military officer and politician (1884–1948) who served as prime minister of Japan during most of World War II and was directly responsible for the attack on Pearl Harbor; he was later tried for war crimes, convicted, and hanged on December 23, 1948. Scarce vintage glossy 4 x 5 photo of Hideki Tojo with his American escort officers, signed in fountain pen by all three, "Hideki Tojo," "A. S. Kenworthy," and "Mike Frisch." Kenworthy adds the location and date: "Tokyo, Japan, 3 July '46." In fine condition.

Accompanied by a provenance statement, in full: "This autograph of Heideki Tojo was obtained 8 July 1946 while I, Richard K. Benjamin, was a member of the Tokyo Provost Marshal's Office, United States 8th Army, during the occupation of Japan by the United States after World War II. The officer on Tojo's right is Lt. Col. Aubrey S. Kenworthy who was in charge of security at the War Crime Trials in Tokyo. The officer on Tojo's left is Capt. Mike Frisch, Commanding Officer of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) attached to the Provost Marshal's Office. The photograph had been taken earlier in the holding room for alleged war criminals, several of whom were present at the time awaiting testimony. My visit to the holding room to obtain the autograph was arranged by Frisch and Kenworthy."
