Vintage matte-finish 3.75 x 5.75 photo of the Allied leaders conferring at their Belgian headquarters in December 1944, amidst the Battle of the Bulge, signed in fountain pen, "B. L. Montgomery, Field-Marshal," "J. Lawton Collins," and "M. B. Ridgway." Reverse bears an "Official War Office Photograph" credit stamp. In very fine condition.
On December 20, 1944, in response to the German Ardennes offensive, Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower temporarily placed the U.S. First and Ninth Armies under British Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery’s command to stabilize the northern shoulder of the Bulge. The decision was controversial among American commanders, particularly General Omar Bradley, who saw it as a slight to U.S. leadership and resented the shift in authority. While Montgomery’s methodical approach helped organize the defense, the episode fueled lingering inter-Allied tensions despite contributing to the eventual containment of the German advance.
