Description

Rare handwritten medical bill by Bunker Hill martyr Joseph Warren, endorsed by his brother and Harvard Medical School founder John Warren

Boston physician, orator, and patriot (1741–1775) who was a pivotal figure in the early revolutionary agitation in Massachusetts and was killed in combat at the Battle of Bunker Hill. Scarce third-person ADS by Joseph Warren, one page, 6 x 3.25, January 1773. Warren pens a request for remittance of his services to Col. Elisha Doane, in full: "Col. Elisha Doane to Joseph Warren Dr., To Medicines and Attendance for himself from May 16, 1772 to January 3, 1773, £0.19.10." Docketed on the reverse in another hand, "Doctor Warren, Bill pd 1773 Jan'y 9," and further endorsed by Warren's brother, Dr. John Warren, founder of the Harvard Medical School: "Contents received, John Warren." Lightly silked for preservation and in fine condition, with a stain to the left edge.

An outstanding medical-related Warren document, desirable not only for its direct connection to Joseph Warren’s Boston practice, but also for its exceptional dual Warren association. Written just two years before his heroic death at Bunker Hill, the piece captures Warren in his civilian role as a working physician, billing Colonel Elisha Doane—one of Massachusetts’s wealthiest and most influential citizens—for months of medicines and attendance. Further endorsed by his brother Dr. John Warren, later a founder of Harvard Medical School, this small bill unites two of early America’s most important medical patriots in a single Revolutionary-era document.
