Description

ALS as president, signed “J. Tyler,” one page, 8 x 10, March 16, 1844. Handwritten letter to “The Secretary of the Treasury,” John Canfield Spencer, requesting papers from Spencer for his inspection, in full: “The Secretary of the Treasury will be good enough to send over for my inspection all the papers in the case of Mr. Earl.” Tyler has hand-addressed the reverse of the second integral page and added his franking signature to the upper right of the address panel, “J. Tyler.” The reverse bears remnants of the original black wax seal. In fine condition, with a small area of seal-related paper loss to the integral address leaf. John Canfield Spencer, from New York, was appointed Secretary of the Treasury in 1843 and served until May, 1844. On the date of this letter, President Tyler was actively corresponding with Treasury Secretary John C. Spencer concerning the Texas Annexation Treaty, negotiated by Secretary of State John C. Calhoun. Spencer opposed the treaty because of its connection to the expansion of slavery. Tyler, meanwhile, intensified his efforts to secure annexation, viewing it as the crowning achievement of his presidency.
