Description

ALS, signed "Florence Nightingale," four pages on two adjoining sheets, 5 x 8, 10 South Street letterhead, March 22, 1883. Handwritten letter to a gentleman, in part: "It is so long since I have heard from you. I fear that you have forgotten, as have not I, the profit & pleasure which I hoped to draw from the opportunity I so eagerly seized of your valued acquaintance.

It is, I think, more than a year since I sent you a map, but you very kind invitation, of India with the irrigated lands of coloured, which I had had prepared by Stanford—and which you were so very good as to say that you would revise & correct. I also sent a map done by hand, of which I have no copy, of the irrigation works of Lind, & a map of the tanks around Madras. I crave to hear from you: But would you be so good as to desire that these maps shall be returned to me, (as I want them for a paper of mine which is about to be read,—almost immediately) and may I earnestly hope that they will be returned with your remarks appended to them?

Both you & I are more than occupied. But you had promised me that you would kindly make an appointment some day a few days beforehand to see me about 5 o'clock . With every wish for your success in every branch of your good work, for poor India." In very good to fine condition, with a vertical strip of toning to each page.

Nightingale published a paper in 1874 entitled 'Life or Death in India,' which offered observations and suggestions regarding health outcomes in India during the British colonial era. In her paper, Nightingale discussed the high mortality rates among British soldiers and attributed them to poor sanitation, inadequate nutrition, and lack of proper medical care. On the subject of irrigation, she wrote: 'Irrigation is essential in many parts of India, but irrigation with stagnant water is almost as injurious to crops as to health. Irrigation should be accompanied by improving the natural drainages of the country, so as to keep the water moving, however slowly.'
