Description

Original hand-cut silhouette of Theodore Roosevelt in a full-bodied pose by noted silhouette artist Beatrix Sherman, 5.5 x 11.75, signed below in pencil, "Theodore Roosevelt." Also signed in fountain pen by the artist, "by Beatrix Sherman." Also captioned and signed on the reverse in fountain pen by Sherman, "Silhouette of Theo. Roosevelt cut at the Hero Land Bazaar winter of 1917—original autograph, Bertha Sherman," and further annotated in pencil, "Loaned to Roosevelt Memorial Exhibition." A smaller bust profile silhouette of Roosevelt is affixed below. Matted and framed with glass on both sides to an overall size of 10 x 16.5. In fine condition.

Beatrix Sherman (1894–1975) was a prolific American silhouette artist whose deft scissor-cut portraits captured thousands of sitters—from everyday society figures to U.S. presidents—over a career spanning more than five decades. Trained at the Art Institute of Chicago, she rose to prominence through exhibitions and international fairs, developing an innovative practice that combined traditional silhouette techniques with meticulous record-keeping and signed likenesses.
