Description

Breathtaking early original Alexander McQueen evening dress worn by Gail Ann Dorsey when she performed with David Bowie at his 50th birthday concert celebration in New York City on January 9, 1997—including an iconic rendition of ‘Under Pressure’ and leading Madison Square Garden in a rendition of ‘Happy Birthday’

Stunning stage-worn Alexander McQueen semi-sheer evening dress worn by bassist Gail Ann Dorsey while performing with David Bowie at the latter’s 50th birthday concert celebration at Madison Square Garden in New York City on January 9, 1997. The dress, which bears no size or maker tag, is constructed of a dark slate-blue floral lace textile with dramatic asymmetrical construction and deconstructed detailing characteristic of the designer’s early avant-garde aesthetic. The form-fitting silhouette features a single three-quarter-length sleeve opposite an intentionally exposed shoulder, an open back, and a revealing split lower skirt panel. Executed in intricate floral lace with alternating tonal blue-gray and pale silver-white patterning over an open mesh ground, the dress combines romantic textilework with McQueen’s signature tension between elegance and sensuality. In fine condition.

David Bowie’s 50th Birthday Celebration Concert, billed as David Bowie and Friends: A Very Special Concert, was held at Madison Square Garden in New York City on January 9, 1997, one day after Bowie’s fiftieth birthday. Staged before a sold-out crowd of nearly 15,000 fans, the landmark event served both as a retrospective celebration of Bowie’s career and as the public launch of material from his then-forthcoming album Earthling. The concert also benefited the charity Save the Children.

The evening featured an extraordinary lineup of guest performers reflecting Bowie’s wide-ranging influence across generations of rock and alternative music, including Lou Reed, Billy Corgan of the Smashing Pumpkins, Foo Fighters and Dave Grohl, Robert Smith of The Cure, Frank Black of the Pixies, and Sonic Youth.

Among the setlist highlights was a celebrated performance of “Under Pressure,” featuring the remarkably talented Gail Ann Dorsey on bass and vocals as she assumed Freddie Mercury’s original vocal parts opposite Bowie. If that moment wasn’t special enough, Dorsey also led the assembled musicians and full Madison Square Garden audience in a rafter-shaking rendition of ‘Happy Birthday’ during the concert finale.

Alexander McQueen (1969-2010) remains one of the most influential and visionary designers of the modern era, revolutionizing fashion in less than two decades with his theatrical silhouettes, technical mastery, and provocative romanticism. Founder of his eponymous label in 1992 and chief designer for Givenchy from 1996 to 2001, McQueen earned four British Designer of the Year awards before his untimely death at age 40. Original stage- and runway-worn McQueen garments from this formative early period are of the utmost rarity and desirability, with the present example elevated further by its direct association with David Bowie’s historic 50th Birthday Celebration Concert at Madison Square Garden.
