Description

Beautiful stage-worn Jean Paul Gaultier Maille multicolor knit slip dress worn by bassist Gail Ann Dorsey when she performed with Algerian artists Rachid Taha, Khaled, and Faudel during the special 1, 2, 3 Soleils concert at the Palais Omnisports de Paris-Bercy in Paris, France, on September 26, 1998. The Italian-made dress is executed in a vividly striped open-knit textile with a folkloric geometric yoke in olive green and ochre. The body features alternating vertical bands of turquoise, burgundy, yellow, ivory, and black, framed by orange trim and delicate shoulder straps, and the hem is finished with an intricate zigzag knit border in orange and metallic gold tones. The interior retains its original “Jean Paul Gaultier Maille” label. In fine condition.

The 1,2,3 Soleils (1, 2, 3 Suns) concert showcase entertained a crowd of over 14,000 at the Palais Omnisports de Paris-Bercy while uniting Algerian raï superstars Khaled, Rachid Taha, and Faudel. Widely regarded as a defining moment in modern North African popular music, the performance fused traditional raï instrumentation with rock, funk, and orchestral arrangements in a landmark cultural event reflecting the growing prominence of Franco-Algerian identity in late-1990s France. Featuring acclaimed performances of signature songs including ‘Aïcha,’ ‘Didi,’ ‘Ya Rayah,’ and ‘Abdel Kader,’ the concert was subsequently released as an internationally successful live album and film, now considered a classic of contemporary world music.

Present throughout the entirety of the concert were the pulsing and grooving bass lines of Gail Ann Dorsey, whose smooth rhythmic mastery laid the necessary backbone for a night filled with soaring vocal performances, hypnotic raï rhythms, and exuberant cross-cultural musical fusion. Released commercially on DVD, the concert footage prominently captures Dorsey wearing the offered Jean Paul Gaultier dress throughout the performance as she anchors the ensemble with her distinctive bass work.
