Description

Mata Hari writes on on dance, Diaghilev, and her indispensable "moonlight effects"

Dutch-born dancer (1876–1917), nee Margaretha Geertruida Zelle, whose renown as a performer was permanently overshadowed by her activities as a German spy during World War I, which led to her execution by firing squad at the age of 41. ALS in French, signed “Mata Hari,” four pages on two adjoining sheets, 5.25 x 8.5, Milan Grand Hotel letterhead, no date. Handwritten letter to Monsieur de Mortier, referring to famed impresario Sergei Diaghilev. In part (translated): "Here is the signed contract for Mr. Diaghilev; you may send me his signature later. As for Berlin, I am quite ready to perform one of my classical dances there; however, I fear that I may lack the plant-based décor and the moonlight effects that are indispensable to me. It therefore depends entirely on the venue and the resources available for the evening. As for the 'Ivan the Terrible' dance, I have found a charming friend here in Preobajenska, who gave me such invaluable pointers regarding the Boyarina costume that this dance—despite the fact that such dances have been seen before—truly stands out from the ordinary."

She further proposes the “Habanera,” based on a painting by Goya: "They are writing truly delightful articles about me here. At first, they were a bit bewildered that I differed so greatly from their traditions; now, however, they have come to understand and admire me greatly." In fine condition. Accompanied by an export certificate from the French Ministry of Culture.
