Description

Atatürk at the apex of power—a striking 1935 signed presidential portrait of the 'Father of the Turks'

Turkish army officer, statesman, and writer (1881–1938) credited as the founder of the Republic of Turkey. Scarce vintage matte-finish 7.5 x 11 photo of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk dressed in formal attire at the height of his presidency, affixed to its original 9.75 x 13 mount, signed in the upper left in fountain pen, "K. Ataturk." Also signed on the mount by the photographer, "Izzet Kaya, 1935." In very good to fine condition, with discoloration to the image, and some damage to the bottom of the mount which could easily be matted out.

Photographed by Izzet Kaya (the pseudonym of Crimean-born photographer Jules Kanzler), this portrait dates to the mature phase of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk’s presidency, a period defined by sweeping secular and nationalist reforms that transformed the remnants of the Ottoman Empire into the modern Republic of Turkey. By this time, Atatürk had consolidated political authority and was internationally recognized as a pivotal modernizer. A remarkable portrait signed by the 'Father of the Turks.'
