Description

Fully signed and uninscribed debut album by Led Zeppelin, with signatures personally obtained by drummer John Bonham for a fellow snooker enthusiast at the Studley Conservative Club in early 1980

Rare early UK pressing of Led Zeppelin’s self-titled debut album (Atlantic, K40031 Stereo), signed beautifully on the front cover in red ballpoint by Jimmy Page, in black ballpoint by Robert Plant and John Paul Jones, and in black felt tip by John Bonham. The record is included, with the runouts bearing the following matrix numbers: “K 40031 A1, S-5, PN, D” and “K-40031-B4, Allen, B, S-6.” In fine condition.

The consignor notes that John Bonham obtained the autographs in early 1980 for a friend at the Studley Conservative Club, where Bonham used to go to drink and play snooker. John lived nearby at Old Hyde Farm in Studley and often visited the club. Footage of Bonham playing snooker at Studley Conservative Club appears in the 1976 Led Zeppelin film The Song Remains the Same.

Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Tracks and a letter of provenance from the son of the recipient: “The signatures on the copy of Led Zeppelin were obtained by John Bonham, at my father’s request. My father used to play snooker with John Bonham at Studley Conservative Club in early 1980.”

Front-signed examples of Led Zeppelin’s debut album are incredibly rare, with only a few known to exist. This example is probably the finest one ever to surface in a public auction. The fact that the signatures were obtained by a member of the group makes this piece even more significant. Perhaps most significant is the fact that it was autographed in early 1980, just months before John Bonham’s untimely death.
