Description

German-American painter (1830-1902) best known for his large landscapes of the American West during the 19th century. Signed book: Christopher Columbus and How He Received and Imparted the Spirit of Discovery by Justin Winsor. First edition. Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1891. Hardcover, 6 x 9, 674 pages. Signed and inscribed on the first free end page in fountain pen, "Capt. Edward Scobell Clapp R.N., With the regards of Albert Bierstadt, Mch 5/92." Autographic condition: very good to fine condition, with scattered light foxing, and an erased notation in the blank area under the signature. book condition: Fair/None, with cracked hinges, staining to boards and spine, rubbing to spine ends, and bumped corners.

Clapp served as Inspector of Imperial Lighthouses in the Royal Navy, and sat as Nautical Assessor in the matter of the stranding and total loss of the British steamship 'Chancellor,' of the port of Middlesbrough, England.

This volume is especially notable as Bierstadt completed his large-scale work, 'The Landing of Columbus,' around 1893, presenting Columbus’s arrival in the Americas as a grand, theatrical spectacle, with glowing light and dramatic groupings of Europeans and indigenous peoples amidst a sweeping shoreline landscape.
