Iconic vintage colorized 11 x 14 photo of six United States Marines raising the American flag atop Mount Suribachi during the Battle of Iwo Jima, taken by Joe Rosenthal of the Associated Press on February 23, 1945, mounted inside a 13 x 20 folder from the Boston Record-American newspaper, signed below the image ink by three survivors of the battle, "Pfc. R. A. Gagnon, U.S.M.C.," "John H. Bradley, PhM2c, U.S. Navy," and "Ira H. Hayes, Pfc., U.S.M.C.". In fine condition, with some light creasing to the top margin, a light notation to the margin above the print, and some toning to the outside of the presentation folder.
This striking large-format colorized presentation of Joe Rosenthal’s immortal Iwo Jima photograph transforms one of the most reproduced images of the 20th century into a vivid and highly displayable piece. Unlike the standard black-and-white prints that defined wartime publication, the carefully applied colorization brings renewed immediacy to the scene—the deep reds of the flag, the earthen tones of Mount Suribachi, and the contrasting uniforms lending a sense of depth and realism that bridges the distance between 1945 and the present day.
Captured on February 23, 1945, during one of the Pacific Theater’s most grueling campaigns, Rosenthal’s photograph quickly became a symbol of perseverance and ultimate victory. Its power was such that it helped drive the Seventh War Loan campaign, rallying a nation behind the war effort. This example is further elevated by the presence of three key figures associated with that legacy—Rene Gagnon, John Bradley, and Ira Hayes—whose signatures represent the human story behind the image and the enduring mythology that followed.
