Description

Early handwritten letter from Keith Richards, dated to the Rolling Stones’ 1964 debut tour of America

ALS signed “Keith, xxx,” one page, 7.25 x 10.5, El Tropicano Motor Hotel (San Antonio) letterhead, postmarked June 13, 1964. Handwritten letter to Connie Berk, in full: “Thanks a lot for the sweet letter, we really enjoyed our stay in L.A, and we miss you all. Texas is really hot, we’ve all got a big tan. Anyway thanks for being so good to us, we all hope to be back very soon.” Includes the original mailing envelope hand-addressed by Richards. In fine condition, with light handling wear. Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Tracks and a full letter of authenticity from Beckett Authentication Services.

The Rolling Stones’ first American tour, June 5–20, 1964, marked a modest and challenging debut in the U.S., where the band was still largely unknown. Playing a short run of dates across major cities and smaller venues, they often faced small or indifferent audiences, in sharp contrast to the Beatles’ earlier success. The demanding schedule included multiple shows in a single day, with two performances on both June 6th and 7th at the Team Fair of Texas in San Antonio. A week later, a notable moment came with their appearance on Hollywood Palace, which was broadcast on June 13th, when host Dean Martin openly mocked the group’s image. Despite its lukewarm reception, the tour laid the groundwork for their rapid rise in the American market the following year.
