Description

Vintage British Airways ‘In-flight Entertainment Programme,’ 5.75 x 8.25, picturing Paul McCartney on the front cover, imagery taken during the photoshoot for his 1983 album, Pipes Of Peace, signed next to his likeness in ballpoint, “All the best! Paul McCartney.” The consignor notes that the autograph was obtained by a stewardess in January 1984 when McCartney was travelling to Barbados, the same trip when he was arrested for marijuana possession. Included with the program is McCartney's original British Airways boarding pass, which lists him under the alias “Mr. Norman.” In fine condition, with light handling wear.

Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Tracks and a letter from the original recipient: “In 1981 [sic] I was a stewardess on a British Airways flight to Barbados. I had Paul McCartney on my flight who very kindly signed his autograph for me. I was also lucky as the inflight entertainment programme had his picture on the front. I also kept his boarding card as he always travelled under the name Mr. Norman.”

During a Barbados holiday in January 1984, local police raided the McCartneys’ rented home after receiving a tip, and Paul and Linda McCartney were arrested for possession of small amounts of cannabis. The repercussions were relatively minor but highly publicized: both pleaded guilty in court and were fined $100 each, avoiding jail time. Speaking upon his return to Heathrow, McCartney reflected without rancor: ‘I’ve got absolutely no grudges…It was a small amount of cannabis and I intended to use it, but the police came to my place and I gave them 10 grams of cannabis. Linda had another small carton of cannabis in her handbag.’
