Description

Beautiful set of four glossy 8.5 x 10.5 silver gelatin photographs of the Beatles by Richard Avedon, which were taken at a London photographic studio in Thompson House at 200 Gray’s Inn Road on August 11, 1967. The black-and-white portraits, which individually depict band members John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr, were later arranged into a horizontal collage, known colloquially as the ‘Mount Rushmore’ portrait, and published as a poster in the January 9, 1968, edition of Look Magazine in the U.S. That same issue also featured Avedon’s more iconic psychedelic portraits of the Beatles. The reverse of each bears Avedon’s photography stamp, subject titles in pencil, and notations dating the prints to May 1987. In overall very fine condition.

In 1967, Beatles manager Brian Epstein commissioned fashion and portrait photographer Richard Avedon to photograph the band and create a series of images reflecting their emerging psychedelic aesthetic. During the August 11, 1967, session, Avedon produced multiple portraits of each member; four were later transformed into his well-known psychedelic works, overlaid with solarization, Day-Glo colors, and symbolic motifs, and titled ‘Flame Bright John,’ ‘Flower Power Paul,’ ‘Mystic George,’ and ‘Dove Loving Ringo.’ The present set represents the original black-and-white portraits from that same sitting, prior to their later artistic alteration.
