Description

Flown Apollo 14 crew patch presented to CDR Alan Shepard to his Pebble Beach caddie, Mitch Wada, pinned to a certificate of authenticity stating that it “was actually flown to the moon…January 31 to February 9 in 1971,” which bears a secretarial signature. Included with the patch is an ALS from Shepard to Wada, February 14, 1996, which reads: “Here is the flight patch we talked about with a piece of paper on which to mount it for framing. Hope you enjoy it! Thanks again for all the help—hope next year is better—in all respects!”

Included with the patch are seven additional items signed by Shepard: a first edition of the book Moon Shot; three framed signed photographs: a NASA portrait inscribed to Wada as a “great caddy,” a golf image inscribed to his “favorite caddy and friend,” and a lunar surface view thanking him for “all the Crosby fun”; and three handwritten ANSs from Shepard further documenting their relationship. A 1978 Crosby National Pro-Am caddie badge and a Pebble Beach caddie card complete the group. In overall fine condition.

On February 6, 1971, during Apollo 14, Shepard became the first person to play golf on the Moon, using a makeshift 6-iron attached to a sample scoop handle. A desirable golf-related lot connecting Shepard’s lunar achievement with his life on the course, preserved through material given directly to his caddie.
