Description

The last Holy Roman Emperor (1768-1835) who ruled from 1792 to 1806, when he dissolved the empire and became the first Emperor of Austria. Partly-printed vellum DS in German, one page, 27.25 x 21.75, December 13, 1818. Imperial Austrian diploma issued by Emperor Francis II in Vienna, formally confirming Paul Freiherr von Taxis as a recipient of the Order of Leopold (Knight’s Cross). The document recognizes his distinguished military service during the Napoleonic Wars, including campaigns of 1809 and 1813, and his role at Basel and the siege of Hüningen. The award is granted (translated) “as a public mark of Our special favor and as well-deserved reward for your distinguished merits,” citing his “judgment, bravery, and determination.” The diploma also instructs the recipient to uphold the duties of the order and serve “for the welfare of the State and Our Imperial House.” Signed at the conclusion by Francis II, with official countersignatures of the Order’s chancellery. The large original paper ‘flower’ seal remains affixed to the bottom. In fine condition, with intersecting folds as issued.

From the personal collection of a lifelong collector, teacher, and traveler with a passion for world history. His collecting years ranged from the 1970s to the present day, meaning that several of the premier pieces have not been on the market in decades.
