Description

In early fall 1964, at the height of Beatlemania, John Lennon applies for — and receives — membership in the Songwriters Guild of Great Britain

DS, one page, 8 x 10, September 30, 1964. Application for full membership into The Songwriters Guild of Great Britain, filled out in another hand, which has added Lennon’s full name, “John Winston Lennon,” his address, “5/6 Argyll Street, London W.1,” telephone number, and the date. Signed below in blue ballpoint by John Lennon. The application was approved on October 23, 1964, and countersigned by the Guild’s General Secretary, Victor Knight. In fine condition. Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Tracks.

The Songwriters Guild of Great Britain, founded in 1947 to represent the professional interests of British songwriters and composers, played a key role in protecting authors’ rights and promoting fair compensation within the industry. This document records Lennon formally registering as a professional songwriter at the height of Beatlemania in 1964, a moment when the band’s explosive success had rapidly transformed him from a rising performer into one half of one of the most commercially powerful songwriting partnerships in the world. For Lennon, seeking Guild membership at this stage was a practical and strategic step, helping to safeguard his rights, manage increasingly substantial royalties, and formalize his standing in the music industry as his work with Paul McCartney gained international recognition. The Guild would later become part of the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors (BASCA), now known as The Ivors Academy.
