Description

American writer (1842–c.1914) best known for his vivid short stories (including the classic 'An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge') and his satirical 'The Devil's Dictionary.' In 1913, while traveling with Pancho Villa's troops during the Mexican Revolution, Bierce disappeared; his ultimate fate remains a mystery. ALS, three pages on two adjoining sheets, 5 x 8, March 19, 1895. Handwritten letter to Frances A. Towle, in part: "If I have seemed to neglect your letter of more than a month ago you are somewhat in fault. You said you were coming to San Jose, and would 'try to find' me. It is easy to find me, and I've been waiting to be found. As you have not come, I suppose you have gone back to the mountains without the honors of a discoverer—so I write.

It is 'awfully' nice of you to ask me up to your place, and I may go; but at present I am so full of work on various undertakings that I should be a bad guest. And when one sees you be wants all his time to devote to that most agreeable business. I thank you very much for the invitation. I'm quite alone now my boy has gone to Los Angeles to live. My health is disgracefully good too." In very good to fine condition, with a thin strip of toning, and some trivial short tears, along the top edge. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, addressed in Bierce's own hand.

From the personal collection of a lifelong collector, teacher, and traveler with a passion for world history. His collecting years ranged from the 1970s to the present day, meaning that several of the premier pieces have not been on the market in decades.
