American writer (1842–c.1914) best known for his vivid short stories (including the classic 'An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge') and his satirical 'The Devil's Dictionary.' In 1913, while traveling with Pancho Villa's troops during the Mexican Revolution, Bierce disappeared; his ultimate fate remains a mystery. Partial ALS, one page both sides, 5 x 8, no date but postmarked November 7, 1894. The last two pages of a letter to Emily Grant, in part: "That I proposed them for publication in 'Prattle,' with a few alterations, but in deference to Mr. McEwen's feelings Mr. Hearst did not publish them, nor anything else that I wrote for two weeks. As my salary was not affected by that I did not greatly mind, but I did mind a little on account of your verses which I thought good. I think so still. I preferred to answer you by letter, for I could hardly say anything to keep you in the limits that I allow myself in my talks 'To Certain Correspondents.'" In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, addressed in Bierce's hand.
