Handwritten letter to his eldest son, Charles Dickens, Jr., declining an invitation to preside over a Rowing Club event, in part: “I would have cheerfully gone out of my way to preside for the Rowing-club, if I had known of their wish a little sooner. But I am unfortunately disabled from doing so, & having replied to several similar invitations that all the engagements of that nature I can reasonably make for this season, I have already made. If I were to gratify my inclination in this instance, I should give offence elsewhere and fall into inconsistencies. But report to the gentlemen concerned, that I will readily consider them as having a claim on me (if they please) and to engage next time.” In fine condition.
