Leading English composer (1857–1934) and a significant figure among late Romantic European musicians. Third-person AMS signed within the text by Edward Elgar, one page, 6.5 x 8, no date. Handwritten manuscript by Elgar concerning the Worcestershire Philharmonic Society, in full: “The new choral and orchestral Society for Worcestershire shewes, as was expected, signs of exceptional vitality and, under the exhilarating conductorship of Sir Edward Elgar will probably do much to remove the reproach that dullness and ineptitude are necessary characteristics of musical attempts in the country. The conductor has arranged to produce for the first time in England a short Cantata by Humperdinck, the celebrated composer of Hansel & Gretel; this should excite interest far outside the radius from which the Worcestershire Philharmonic Society draws its members.” In fine condition, with some minor edge loss.
An appealing manuscript relating to Elgar's work with the Worcestershire Philharmonic Society during his years as one of Britain's leading musical figures. Writing in the third person, Elgar praises the society's “exceptional vitality” under his own “exhilarating conductorship” and highlights its ambitious programming, including the first English performance of a cantata by Engelbert Humperdinck, composer of Hansel & Gretel. Notably referring to himself as “Sir Edward Elgar,” the manuscript necessarily postdates his knighthood in 1904. A scarce and engaging manuscript reflecting Elgar's efforts to broaden the cultural reach of English musical life through regional orchestral and choral performance.
