Description

"My life as a thriller writer"—the James Bond author prepares to speak before the London Author's Club

TLS signed “Yours sincerely, Ian Fleming,” one page, 8 x 10, 4 Old Mitre Court letterhead, August 30, 1961. Letter to Robin Goodfellow of the Author's Club, London, in part: "I am highly honoured by the kind invitation extended by your Committee. To tell you the truth, I loathe these sort of functions and I have absolutely nothing to say of any interest to anyone, but I shall do my best to get up and waffle incoherently about my life as a thriller writer. November 22nd looks a very long way ahead, but as I have no appointments of any kind from now until the end of the year I can suggest no preferable alternative. So I will put a skull-and-cross-bones against that evening in my empty engagement book." In fine condition.

A wonderfully candid and self-deprecating letter from Ian Fleming, the celebrated creator of James Bond, offering rare insight into his personality behind the polished image of a bestselling author. Fleming’s humorous reluctance to attend literary functions, paired with his playful reference to “waffle incoherently” about his career, underscores his wit and charm. Such correspondence is highly desirable, not only for its literary significance but also for its revealing glimpse into the private disposition of one of the 20th century’s most iconic writers.

From the personal collection of a lifelong collector, teacher, and traveler with a passion for world history. His collecting years ranged from the 1970s to the present day, meaning that several of the premier pieces have not been on the market in decades.
