French-Irish sculptor (1848–1907) of the Beaux-Arts generation who embodied the ideals of the American Renaissance, known for his Civil War memorials and for the design of the iconic $20 Double Eagle gold coin. TLS, two pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.5 x 7, Aspet, Windsor, Vermont letterhead, September 14, 1906. Letter to Jean B. Cook, in full: “Thank you for your very good letter. I do not feel that I half merit those thoughts you have expressed toward me, but nevertheless I appreciate such a note as you sent. I hope that I shall regain my feet as winter approaches, for I have many ideas drifting about in my head that I would like to put into tangible form.” In fine condition, with minor splitting to the central horizontal fold. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope.
Written from Aspet in September 1906, the year before his death, the letter dates from the final stage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens’s long struggle with cancer. In it, he expresses hope that he will soon “regain my feet,” adding that he has “many ideas drifting about in my head that I would like to put into tangible form.” The remarks were written while the sculptor continued to oversee major artistic projects from his Cornish, New Hampshire studio despite declining health.
