Description

ALS, one page both sides, 5 x 8, June 15, 1952. Handwritten letter to Mr. Stapleton, in full: "I was sorry indeed to hear of your misfortune and can only wish you all the necessary courage for living with it. I have not read 'Many Mansions — only Thomas Sugrue's work on Cayce, together with miscellaneous scraps of information about the man. A very valuable book by one who has had much experience in a field similar to Cayce's is Rachel Beard's 'Everyman's Search' — a record of spiritual healing by a woman doctor who gave up the practice of medicine for the other kind of healing." In fine condition.

Accompanied by a carbon copy of Stapleton's original letter, in which he describes the loss of sight in one eye and recommends Gina Cerminara's Edgar Cayce-inspired work Many Mansions, as well as a later handwritten letter from Huxley's secretary, advising that “Mr. Huxley is recovering from an attack of severe iritis… and he wishes me to inform you that his own teacher of the Bates Method is outstanding: Mrs. M.D. Corlett.”

Responding to Stapleton's account of severe vision loss, Huxley recommends works on spiritual healing and Edgar Cayce, the famed American clairvoyant whose teachings attracted considerable interest among seekers of alternative approaches to health and consciousness. The accompanying correspondence further connects the exchange to Huxley's longstanding interest in the Bates Method, a controversial vision-improvement system he credited with helping him overcome the severe eyesight problems that had affected him since childhood. As Huxley wrote in 1942: 'As a boy I went almost blind for nearly two years and have remained since then with very imperfect vision…Three years ago [1939] I accidentally stumbled upon an educational method…by the aid of which I am gradually learning to see again.'

From the personal collection of a lifelong collector, teacher, and traveler with a passion for world history. His collecting years ranged from the 1970s to the present day, meaning that several of the premier pieces have not been on the market in decades.
