ALS, one page, 8.25 x 10.25, Legacion de Los Estados Unidos en Espana letterhead, April 30, 1846. Addressed from Madrid, a handwritten letter to Nicholas B. Boyle, “Consul of the United States, Mahon,” in full: “I herewith send you your Exequatur received this day from the Department of State, and also the original commission signed by the President of the United States.” Affixed to a same-size cardstock sheet and in very good condition, with areas of paper loss, and overall staining affecting appearance. Written during the final months of Washington Irving's tenure as U.S. Minister to Spain, this letter references and forwards an original commission signed by President James K. Polk, creating an appealing association between two of the most recognizable figures of mid-nineteenth-century America.
