Description

ALS, one page both sides, 4.5 x 3.5, Burwash, Etchingham (Bateman's) stationery card, October 2, 1911. Handwritten letter to Dr. Freeman: “If it is convenient and in your opinion desirable, I should like to come down on Tuesday, Oct. 10th to see my sister, Mrs. J. M. Fleming. I propose to arrive at Andover Junction at 12.49, from Waterloo, & to return by the 4.38 p.m. I should lunch before driving out to you.” In very good to fine condition, with scattered light foxing, and a central horizontal fold.

Written from Kipling's home at Bateman's in Sussex, this personal letter concerns a visit to his sister Alice 'Trix' Fleming, with whom he shared an exceptionally close lifelong bond. By 1911, Trix had been struggling with mental illness for more than a decade, and Kipling writes to Dr. Freeman to arrange a visit, carefully coordinating train schedules and travel plans. The letter provides a glimpse into an important family relationship during the mature years of the Nobel Prize-winning author.

From the personal collection of a lifelong collector, teacher, and traveler with a passion for world history. His collecting years ranged from the 1970s to the present day, meaning that several of the premier pieces have not been on the market in decades.
