Belgian surrealist artist (1898-1967) known for his depictions of familiar objects in unfamiliar, unexpected contexts, which often provoked questions about the nature and boundaries of reality and representation. His imagery has influenced pop art, minimalist art, and conceptual art. ALS in French, one page on a 5.5 x 4.25 postcard of his painting 'Le Jockey Perdu,' January 6, 1964. Handwritten letter to a lady, in part (translated): "I thank you for your prayers, and I allow myself to order you my best wishes on the occasion of the New Year. I very much appreciate the interest you have in my work." In fine condition.
Written on a postcard reproducing Le Jockey Perdu (The Lost Jockey), the painting Magritte later identified as his first truly Surrealist work, this late-career letter dates to just three years before his death in 1967. First exhibited in Magritte's landmark 1927 one-man show at Galerie Le Centaure in Brussels, Le Jockey Perdu remained one of the artist's most important and enduring images, a motif he revisited throughout his career.
