Untranslated handwritten letter to Philippe Burty, editor of the Gazette des Beaux-Arts. In fine condition.
Addressed to Philippe Burty, this letter links two important figures in nineteenth-century French art and culture. Burty had just begun his association with the newly founded Gazette des Beaux-Arts, the influential journal that would become one of the leading voices in the French art world. As a critic, writer, and champion of contemporary artists, Burty later helped popularize Japanese art in Europe and famously coined the term ‘Japonisme’ in 1872.
The letter dates to a pivotal year in Nadar’s career. In 1859, he secured a decisive legal victory establishing his exclusive right to the ‘Nadar’ name while continuing to exhibit the photographic portraits that would make him one of the most celebrated photographers of nineteenth-century France.
