Description

Nobel Prize–winning Russian author and dissident (1918-2008) whose writings exposed the brutality of the Soviet Gulag prison system and made him one of the most influential critics of Soviet repression. Imprisoned for eight years after criticizing Joseph Stalin in private correspondence, he later chronicled his experiences in landmark works including One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich and The Gulag Archipelago. TLS in Cyrillic, one page, 8.5 x 5.5, January 8, 1988. Letter to Mikhail Heifetz, in full (translated): “/I apologize because I still don't know your patronymic/ Thank you for your kind sentiment. However, my work is so intense /and my age doesn't allow me to slow down /, that I just about never meet anyone, almost five years ago I stopped doing any political journalism, public announcements, articles, – each effort interrupts and unsettles me. I wish you a successful trip.” In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope.

Michael Heifetz (1934-2019) was a Soviet and Israeli historian and journalist. In 1974 he had been sentenced to four years in prison and two in exile for writing the preface to a samizdat edition of Joseph Brodsky, amongst other activities. He emigrated to Israel on his release in 1980.

From the personal collection of a lifelong collector, teacher, and traveler with a passion for world history. His collecting years ranged from the 1970s to the present day, meaning that several of the premier pieces have not been on the market in decades.
