One of the leading literary figures of the Victorian era, he was regarded as Charles Dickens's chief rival and earned lasting acclaim for his witty critiques of social ambition, hypocrisy, and class. ALS signed “W. M. Thackeray,” one page, 4.5 x 7, no date. Handwritten letter addressed from Kensington: “I am quite annoyed to be obliged to forgo the pleasure of dining with you to day: but I am so behindhand with my month's work that I am obliged to fly into the country, altogether, and have dinner parties and pleasure behind me. Pray excuse me and believe me.” In fine condition.
