Prolific French journalist, novelist, and activist (1840–1902) best known as one of the leading figures of naturalism and for his inflammatory 1898 open letter, 'J'Accuse!,' which exposed the anti-Semitism of the French press and government in the infamous Dreyfus Affair. ALS in French, one page, 5.25 x 8.25, December 11, 1883. Handwritten letter to an unidentified woman (translated): “I am sending you ten passes for the dress rehearsal. Among them are two for you personally, since no one would allow you to pass inspection without tickets in hand. I will do everything possible to obtain two for Mr. Renacle, though I cannot promise anything yet, as I am completely overwhelmed.” Zola adds a postscript: “My wife will wait for you in the first box during the performance.” In fine condition.
Written two days before the December 13, 1883 premiere of the stage adaptation of Pot-Bouille at Paris's Théâtre de l'Ambigu-Comique, Zola's note concerns the distribution of passes for a dress rehearsal, apologizing that he is "completely overwhelmed" as he attempts to accommodate additional ticket requests. The adaptation, produced in collaboration with playwright William Busnach, was among the most prominent theatrical interpretations of Zola's celebrated Rougon-Macquart novels and attracted considerable public attention in Paris.
