Description

One of Hemingway's last recorded letters, sent from the Mayo Clinic in 1961

LS, signed "Ernest Hemingway," one page both sides, 5.5 x 8.5, January 15, 1961. Letter to the Ray P. Gates Company, in part: "You can find Bumby, they call him Jack, now, at 301 Montgomery Street, San Francisco, California. Where he works; for Merrill, Lynch, Pierce, Fenner, and Smith, Inc. I know he'd be glad to hear from you, so let him know where you are. When we ran the recon into Paris the head of the Army, Le Clerc and Co., went a little to the left of where you guys were at school together. Thanks very much for writing me here. Everything is under control, they tell me now and it's only a matter of holding the weight down to a poundage that is difficult for me to make, but not impossible. Should be finished here the end of this week. Best always and I hope we will meet again before too long." In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, postmarked at Rochester, Minnesota, with a penciled annotation on the reverse: "Dictated to and written by nurse—signed by Hemingway at Mayo Clinic."

Accompanied by a 1990 newspaper article about the letter, in part: A Santa Rosa Beach man who says he has the very last letter ever written by Ernest Hemingway won't part with it. Not even for $35,000. That's how much Roy P. Gates Jr., 68, has been offered for the handwritten letter dated Jan. 15, 1961 - the last recorded date of known correspondence from the writer before he took his own life in July of that year. Whether it is the last letter, however, is uncertain…Gates' relationship to Hemingway is marginal. It was Gates' filmmaker father that knew the writer. However, Roy developed a friendship with Hemingway's first son, Jack, when the two were roommates in a private school in France called Ecole du Mont Cel. The school was bought by Cartier and has since become a contemporary art museum. Gates said he also spent time with Ernest Hemingway at his now famous house in Key West. That was where he last saw the writer in 1938. Gates' next and last contact with Hemingway was a letter he sent to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., where the writer was receiving shock treatments for manic depression."

From the personal collection of a lifelong collector, teacher, and traveler with a passion for world history. His collecting years ranged from the 1970s to the present day, meaning that several of the premier pieces have not been on the market in decades.
