Description

Emperor of Russia (1728–1762) who was overthrown by his wife, Catherine the Great. He was deposed by troops loyal to his wife, who succeeded him as Empress Catherine II. Despite his generally poor reputation, Peter III made some progressive reforms during his short reign: he proclaimed religious freedom and encouraged education, sought to modernize the Russian army, abolished the secret police, which had been infamous for its extreme violence, and made it illegal for landowners to kill their serfs without going to court. Manuscript DS in German, signed “Peter, Grand Duke,” one page, 8 x 12.5, February 8, 1752. Military promotion document, in part: "Inasmuch as we have confidence and respect in our Auditeur, therefore in recognition of his services we announce his appointment to the rank of Lieutenant according to his seniority. We have placed here our signature and the Grand Ducal seal in witness thereof." Neatly signed at the conclusion in ink by Peter III. In fine condition, with an "Autograph Collection of Dr. Max Thorek" stamp at upper right. Accompanied by its hardcover folder from the "Autograph Collection of Dr. Max Thorek."

From the personal collection of a lifelong collector, teacher, and traveler with a passion for world history. His collecting years ranged from the 1970s to the present day, meaning that several of the premier pieces have not been on the market in decades.
