Description

King of France (1550–1574) from 1560 until his death, whose reign was fraught with religious conflict including the St. Bartholomew's Day massacre. Manuscript DS in French, signed “Charles,” one page both sides, 9 x 13.75, January 20, 1567. Record of benefits and rewards to be granted to royal servants, including captain of the guard, valet de chambre, and sommelier, denoting the amounts in livres. Prominently signed at the conclusion in ink by King Charles IX. In very good to fine condition, with small stains, edge chipping, and partial splitting along the hinge.

From the personal collection of a lifelong collector, teacher, and traveler with a passion for world history. His collecting years ranged from the 1970s to the present day, meaning that several of the premier pieces have not been on the market in decades.
