French cardinal and statesman (1585-1642) who served as chief minister from 1624 until his death, widely considered the world's first prime minister. DS in French, signed “Armand Card. de Richelieu,” one page both sides, 8.25 x 13.75, 1635. Cardinal Richelieu grants a lifetime pension (paid quarterly from the revenues of one of his benefices) to a professor of theology at Sorbonne, in recognition of his good service. Neatly signed at the conclusion in ink by Cardinal Richelieu, and countersigned by witnesses. In fine condition.
From the personal collection of a lifelong collector, teacher, and traveler with a passion for world history. His collecting years ranged from the 1970s to the present day, meaning that several of the premier pieces have not been on the market in decades.
