Description

Voltaire writes from Ferney, 1763: "It is true that I can no longer perform the comedy"

Versatile French Enlightenment writer (1694–1778) best remembered for his satirical work Candide. LS in French, signed “V,” one page, 6 x 8, November 26, 1763. Letter to the Prince of Ligne, in full (translated): "Receive, Prince, along with the thanks of my niece and our children, those of an old man, for every age is equally sensitive to your merit. It is true that I can no longer perform the comedy, but for this pleasure as for all those that I must renounce, I love seeing it in others. My enjoyment is in knowing that they are enjoying themselves. I desire to see you again amid our mountains more than I expect to do so. The appearance that you made there has left us with regrets that will last a long time. We would be too happy if we were capable of possessing you, as we are of loving and respecting you. The sick old man fulfills these two duties perfectly." In fine condition. Accompanied by an engraved portrait of the celebrated writer.

Written from Voltaire’s retreat at Ferney in the French Alps, this warm 1763 letter reflects the aging philosopher’s cultivated role as host, correspondent, and theatrical patron, even as ill health kept him from performing himself. Addressed to the Prince de Ligne, it mingles affection and graceful self-deprecation, praising the prince’s charm while presenting Voltaire’s household as still animated by the sociable pleasures of theater, conversation, and enlightened friendship.
