Description

Robespierre and the Committee of Public Safety direct resources "for the defense of the Republic" during the 'Reign of Terror'

Fanatical idealist leader of the French Revolution (1758–1794) who was arrested and executed for the 'Reign of Terror.' Manuscript DS in French, signed “Robespierre,” "Carnot," and "Hérault," three pages on two adjoining sheets, 8.25 x 12.5, September 29, 1793. Document issued by the Committee of Public Safety, in part (translated): "The committee has received, Citizen, the observations that have been addressed to it by Citizen Boullyer, foreman of the furnace…It has been decided to take over the iron for the service of the Republic, and he is going to make you part of the decisions which have arisen, and asks you to cooperate to the best of your ability in the execution of them. Citizen Boullyer notes that his furnace is without forge and that the smelting has been provided without sale to the foreman of the forge who must refine it…but conforming to the order of the committee, the smelting must be done in the forge that refines it, and there it must be handled for the service of the Republic, and converted part into standard sample iron and part into cannon plate, for later to be dispatched to Paris, allotted by the Department of War.

The furnace is set except for lack of water and supplies, and cannot be fired up by December 15. Citizen Boullyer is energetically engaged in rushing the supplies, and in speeding up as much as he can the refiring. He complains about the difficulty of getting grain for the nourishment of the workers since the products of the mill are evidently destined for the defense of the Republic; it is necessary to authorize the foremen of these mills to keep the grain that they have harvested, and which is necessary to the nourishment of their workers, and even to buy some if they need to.

Their workers and their ordinary employees and the administrative needs of their establishment are required for the service of the Republic, and used in the forges and furnaces to which they are attached, the service that they render in contributing to the manufacture of arms will be more useful…Many particular individuals are buying timber to put the change in motion, it is said, and to reduce the manufacture of coal; it is necessary to watch these abuses and to act so that the forges and furnaces are working for the nation, having their sufficient supplies, and not to favor the conversion into goods of wood that is necessary to the service of the armies of land and sea.

As far as the letters that the factory foremen received from the creditors and which could provide them the advance funds, they could be supplied by the facilities that could be furnished by the Minister of War, or the Central Administration…The Committee recommends that you with the most care to keep a hand on the execution of the beneficial measures that it takes and about which our enemies feel the importance so that they can use all means to impede them." Signed at the conclusion in ink by Maximilien Robespierre, Lazare Carnot, and Marie-Jean Hérault de Séchelles. In fine condition.
